Boyle has been a central figure in American fiction since the 1970s, publishing more than two dozen novels and collections of short stories, a body of work which has been recognized with the Rea Award for the Short Story and the Robert Kirsch Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Los Angeles Times. His new work combines fiction, history, and philosophical speculation for a heady look at the 1960s’ encounter with LSD. The story centers on Fitzhugh Loney, a Harvard PhD student, and his wife, who are introduced to the amazing new drug by Timothy Leary. They soon leave clinical research behind, establishing a commune in a sixty-four room mansion where they indulge in a wide range of free-wheeling experiments. Boyle’s energetic and insightful depictions of the group are both entertaining and a provocative exploration of questions of reality, identity, and creativity.
