The Invention of Wings (Viking, $27.95), the third novel by the author of The Secret Life of Bees is a dual narrative, with events recounted from the perspectives of the abolitionist Sarah Grimké and her fictional handmaid, Handful. Set in Charleston and New England, the book follows the women through some three decades of war, abolition, and the struggle for women’s rights.
