As Vogel recounts in this vivid recreation of “Operation Gold,” what began as an ambitious CIA/MI6 project to tap into Soviet telecommunication lines via a 1,500 foot tunnel into East Berlin soon turned into a hunt for a dangerous spy. Known as Agent Diamond by his handlers, George Blake was more cryptic and did more damage than other British traitors such as Kim Philby and Guy Burgess. Vogel, a Washington Post reporter and the author of Through the Perilous Fight, draws on previously secret documents and interviews with key participants—including Blake himself. Now 96, Blake was sentenced in 1961 to 42 years in prison; he escaped and has lived in Russia since 1966.
