Steve Harrigan - A Friend of Mr. Lincoln

Sunday, March 13, 2016 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Harrigan’s Remember Ben Clayton won the James Fenimore Cooper Prize from the Society of American Historians for best historical novel, and his ability to bring the past to life, combined with the sense of drama he’s honed in his work on television scripts, makes his tenth novel vivid and immediate. Unfolding between 1832 and 1861, the narrative explores the long friendship between a fictional poet, Cage Weatherby, and the rangy circuit-riding lawyer, one Abe Lincoln, he meets during the Black Hawk War. Of strikingly different temperaments, with different ambitions, and, most fatefully, differing views of women, the two men nonetheless become close confidants, until a trial, a betrayal, and Mary Todd come between them.

Harrigan will be in conversation with Glenn Frankel, a former Washington Post reporter and editor whose latest book is The Searchers: The Making of an American Legend.
