@ Busboys and Poets Takoma: Stefanie Haeffele-Balch - Community Revival in the Wake of Disaster: Lessons in Local Entrepreneurship
With co-authors Laura E. Grube, assistant professor of economics at Beloit, and Virgil Henry Storr, George Mason Mercatus Center senior director of academic programs, Haeffele-Balch, deputy director of academic programs, shows how entrepreneurship of a particular kind is key to restoring strong and viable communities hit by natural disasters. Using examples from Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy, the authors link entrepreneurs’ abilities to rebuild social networks, provide essential goods and services, and foster hope in a brighter future with the implementation of social changes that can promote greater stability than what many communities enjoyed before the disaster.
