Sophia Shalmiyev - Mother Winter: A Memoir — in conversation with Jeannie Vanasco

Upcoming Event
Sunday, February 24, 2019 - 3:00pm to 4:00pm

Shalmiyev and her Azerbaijani father emigrated to the U.S. when she was eleven, leaving behind her Russian mother, who struggled with alcoholism so severe that she drank cologne when vodka wasn’t available. In New York, her father soon remarried and Shalmiyev turned to female artists and thinkers, forging the feminist identity that has shaped her work as a writer and editor. She continued to be haunted by her lost mother, however, and in this compelling and complex memoir she interweaves her affecting personal story with rich meditations on art, culture, and motherhood. Shalmiyev will be in conversation with Jeannie Vanasco, author of the memoir, The Glass Eye.
