Scott Raymond Einberger - With Distance in His Eyes: The Environmental Life and Legacy of Stewart Udall

Upcoming Event
Sunday, July 22, 2018 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Stewart Udall (1920-2010) served as secretary of the interior from 1961 to 1969, and during his tenure he was pivotal to landmark legislation such as the Wilderness Act and the Endangered Species Preservation Act. He also wrote The Quiet Crisis, a classic work of environmental history, and was one of the first to use the phrase “climate change.” In this comprehensive biography, Einberger, a D.C.-based environmental historian and public lands enthusiast, discusses Udall’s formative years, shows how his conservation trips, outstanding staff, writing expertise, and ability to compromise made him such a successful interior secretary, and follows his post-Washington career, when Udall continued to be publically active on behalf of environmental issues.
