Sanford D. Horwitt - Conversations with Abner Mikva: Final Reflections on Chicago Politics, Democracy's Future, and a Life of Public Service

Upcoming Event
Saturday, March 16, 2019 - 3:30pm to 4:30pm

One of the indomitable voices of the left, Abner Mikva (1926-2016) served in the Illinois House of Representatives and in all three branches of the federal government: nine years in the U.S. House, fifteen as a judge on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, and a year as the White House Counsel in the Clinton administration. In 2013 he sat down with Horwitt, his former speechwriter and friend, for monthly discussions about his life. In this transcription of the meetings, we not only hear Mikva’s priceless stories about the Daley political machine, the NRA, the Nazis who marched in Skokie, and the young Barack Obama he mentored—and who later awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom—but get a sense of the man himself: his wit, spirit, and uncompromising principles.
