S. L. Price - Playing Through the Whistle: Steel, Football, and an American Town

Upcoming Event
Sunday, October 9, 2016 - 5:00pm to 6:00pm

In his new book, Price, a long-time Sports Illustrated senior writer, tells two related stories that, together, testify to American resilience. A profile of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, the narrative chronicles the community’s amazing high-school football team, which has produced NFL stars such as Mike Ditka and Darrelle Revis. The town was also noteworthy as the headquarters of the Jones & Laughlin steel mill, once the nation’s fourth largest. But the mill, which had been a crucial supplier during World War II, closed in 2000. As Aliquippa faced economic decline and social ills, its football team continued its outstanding record on the field, and served as a sustaining source of civic pride.
