S. C. Gwynne - Hymns of the Republic: The Story of the Final Year of the American Civil War

Upcoming Event
Friday, November 8, 2019 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

From Sherman’s March and the guerrilla war in Missouri to Lincoln’s near loss in the election of 1864 and the epic showdowns between Grant and Lee that ended at Appomattox, many of the iconic events of the Civil War occurred in the conflict’s final year. In this vivid narrative of 1864, Gwynne, a former journalist and author of Rebel Yell and Empire of the Summer Moon, focuses on the role of key individuals in these and other events, giving insightful and often surprising portraits of Clara Barton, Generals Grant, Lee, and Sherman, and, most of all, some of the 180,000 Black Union soldiers whose battlefield performance was pivotal to the conflict’s outcome.
