To many it may seem like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez burst out of nowhere, but as Young Turks political commentator Grim reports in this history of the last thirty years of the Democratic Party, her election is rooted in events dating back to 1988. That year saw the rise of the Rainbow Coalition under the leadership of Jesse Jackson, who nearly won the Party’s nomination for president. Jackson was endorsed by Bernie Sanders, then mayor of Burlington, who in 2016 narrowly lost his own bid for the presidency, but whose supporters, including Ocasio-Cortez, continued to resist Party centrists by organizing AOC’s triumphant run for Congress.
