Robin Becker - The Black Bear Inside Me — at the Wharf

Upcoming Event
Sunday, May 6, 2018 - 6:30pm to 7:30pm

Throughout this accomplished collection, Becker, author of books including Tiger Heron, The Horse Fair, and the Lambda Award-winning All-American Girl, reminds us that what we do to our fellow creatures, whether human or animal, we also do to ourselves. Compassionate, lyrical, and wide-ranging, Becker’s poems speak to the suffering of “the enslaved, 15-year-old Cambodian deckhands,” as well as the plight of wild animals in a world of diminishing wilderness. In the taut, graceful title poem, Becker speaks as one of New Hampshire’s “5,000 black bears.” Pragmatic and wise, she knows that “they will take/ me in the September// kill,” but also that “the land // that supports us/supports them; without us,// adapted to scarcity and woodland/loss, they’re going down.”
