Robert W. Fieseler - Tinderbox: The Untold Story of the Up Stairs Lounge Fire and the Rise of Gay Liberation — at Politics and Prose at The Wharf

Until the shootings in Orlando’s Pulse nightclub in 2016, the largest mass murder of gays in the U.S. occurred in the fire in the New Orleans Up Stairs Lounge on June 24, 1973. The blaze killed thirty-two people, but after a flurry of news reports, it was largely forgotten. As Fieseler shows in his meticulous recreation of the incident, the silence that followed it was part of a homophobic response that also prompted shaming of the survivors—some were fired for having been at the Up Stairs—and denying Catholic victims proper burial rights. Meanwhile, a cursory investigation was inconclusive, and the official cause of the conflagration is still listed as of undetermined origin. Drawing on original research and interviews with people who have never spoken on the record, Fieseler restores an important milestone to its place in the ongoing struggle for gay rights.
