Robert B. Talisse - Overdoing Democracy: Why We Must Put Politics in Its Place

Upcoming Event
Saturday, November 2, 2019 - 3:30pm to 4:30pm

The W. Alton Jones Professor of Philosophy at Vanderbilt, Talisse specializes in democratic theory, and his new book argues that today’s rampant politicization of every aspect of life is undermining the very foundations of democracy. As people define one another by political affiliation, limit their interactions to those with like-minded views, and demonize those they disagree with, they deepen polarization and squelch many of the social benefits democracy can deliver. The way back to a healthy democracy, Talisse shows, is for us to cultivate civic friendships and collective activities outside and independent of politics.
