Robert Alter - The Art of Bible Translation

Upcoming Event
Saturday, April 6, 2019 - 3:30pm to 4:30pm

Alter, emeritus professor of Hebrew and comparative literature at the University of California, Berkeley, has lectured and written on the Bible extensively, but the heart of his scholarship is translation. Over the last several decades he has published acclaimed English versions of various portions of the Hebrew Bible, at last completing his monumental rendering of the entire work in 2018. His new book is a deeply personal account of this long immersion in translating scripture. Among the first of his lessons was the crucial importance of reproducing Biblical Hebrew’s rhythm and cadences. The Bible’s literary style, he believes, “is not some sort of aesthetic embellishment of the ‘message’ of Scripture but the vital medium through which the biblical vision of God, human nature, history, politics, society, and moral value is conveyed.”
