Richard Bell - Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped Into Slavery and Their Astonishing Odyssey Home

Upcoming Event
Saturday, November 16, 2019 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

During the time the Underground Railroad was helping Black slaves escape into free states, a parallel network—the Reverse Underground Railroad—was abducting thousands of free African Americans and selling them into slavery. In this compelling account of a little-known episode, Bell, who teaches Early American history at the University of Maryland, tells the story of five Black boys who were kidnapped from Philadelphia in 1825. Lured onto a boat, they were blindfolded, shackled, and transported to Mississippi. Determined to regain their freedom, the five worked together to escape and eventually returned home, where they initiated a manhunt to bring their captors to justice.
