Éric Vuillard - The Order of the Day — in conversation with Carol Volk — at Politics and Prose at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Tuesday, October 30, 2018 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Vuillard, a novelist and filmmaker, won the prestigious Prix Goncourt, France’s highest literary honor, for this haunting and unconventional history. Focusing on the early years of the Third Reich, he recreates several seemingly minor events that were actually pivotal moments in which the future hung in the balance. One narrative revisits a February 1933 meeting between Hitler and two dozen business leaders he needed to persuade to support him. Another follows Germany’s March 1938 annexation of Austria through a series of carefully planned social and diplomatic occasions that laid the ground for it. Highlighting these backstage machinations, Vuillard shows that events that history presents as ineluctable were the result of manipulation and threats, and they could have gone otherwise.

Vuillard will be in conversation with Carol Volk, director of the DC-Area Literary Translators Network and translator for French-language authors like Patrick Chamoiseau, Tahar Ben Jelloun, and Emmanuel Bove.
