Rex Ogle - Free Lunch—in Children and Teens

Upcoming Event
Thursday, November 7, 2019 - 7:00pm

Rex and his younger brother have often gone hungry, wear secondhand clothes, and rarely have the right school supplies.  When Rex starts a new school for sixth grade, he is signed up for the free lunch program. Every day, he suffers the humiliation of this fact in front of the entire school. His mother’s aggression swings uncontrollably to violence as does his abusive stepfather, making home life miserable. Despite everything, young Rex is able to find little moments of hope that carry him through his hardships. Grounded in the immediacy and intensity of physical hunger, Ogle’s memoir is compulsively readable, written with the innocent authenticity of a sixth-grade narrator. Ages 11-13.
