Reginald Dwayne Betts - Felon: Poems — at Politics and Prose at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Wednesday, October 16, 2019 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

In his memoir, A Question of Freedom, and two collections of poetry, Shahid Reads His Own Palm and Bastards of the Reagan Era, Betts has borne powerful witness to the experience of growing up black and marginalized. Awarded an NAACP Image Award, a Soros Justice Fellowship, and appointed by President Obama to the Coordinating Council of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, Betts regularly lectures on issues surrounding mass incarceration. In his new book he uses the compressed power of lyric poetry to trace a man’s life through underemployment, homelessness, love, drug abuse, and violence, focusing on the challenges of re-entry after imprisonment. With support from the Campaign for Youth Justice.
