An accomplished short-story writer, Hassib takes on the American dream—and its corollary nightmare—in her first novel. Set in placid suburban New Jersey, the story concerns two families, the Bradstreets, whose name suggest vintage Puritan stock, and their neighbors, the Al-Menshawys, more recent arrivals from Egypt, who have worked hard to prosper in their new homeland. When a calamity strikes both houses, the seemingly strong friendship between the two clans quickly snaps and the Al-Menshawys, suddenly outcasts, struggle to make their place anew.
