An internal medicine physician, entrepreneur, and, from 2014 to 2017, the nation’s 19th Surgeon General, Murthy traveled across the country to investigate the opioid crisis—and found that it’s driven by another, overlooked epidemic: loneliness. Exacerbated by technology, mobility, commercialism, and fraying social and community institutions, loneliness is a major public health threat, one that harms both the body’s immune system and the general social stability. In this groundbreaking report, Murthy shows how loneliness is responsible for the upsurge in suicides, depression, violence, addiction, and even political polarization, and he follows the diagnosis with profiles of communities and cultures that practice a set of core principles designed to strengthen connections. Murthy will be joined in conversation with Sarah Hurwitz. Hurwitz was a senior speechwriter for President Barack Obama as well as head speechwriter for First Lady Michelle Obama. Her book, Here All Along: Finding Meaning, Spirituality, and a Deeper Connection to Life--in Judaism (After Finally Choosing to Look There), was released in 2019.
