P&P Live! : Olga Khazan - Weird: The Power of Being an Outsider in an Insider World

Upcoming Event
Tuesday, April 7, 2020 - 7:00pm

This event will be streamed online as part of our P&P Live! Series.

An award-winning writer for The Atlantic and host of the magazine’s online video series, You Are Here: The Incredible Science Behind Everyday Life, Khazan wondered about the connection between her professional struggles and successes and her early years, when, a Russian immigrant in West Texas, she never felt quite in synch. Combining scientific research, her own experience, and profiles of people at odds with their environments—a female NASCAR driver, the transgender mayor of a small town, a Muslim in a predominantly Christian community, and others—Khazan explores why conformity is so important, examines what happens to those alienated from it, and urges us to understand difference as a strength, not a failing.
