P&P Live!: Jill Bialosky and Yiyun Li

Upcoming Event
Wednesday, August 26, 2020 - 6:00pm

This event wll be streamed online as part of our P&P Live! Series.

In Asylum: A personal, historical, natural inquiry in 103 lyric sections, poet Jill Bialosky embarks on a Virgilian journey, building a narrative sequence from 103 elegant poems and prose sections that cohere in their intensity and their need to explore darkness and sustenance both. Taken together, these piercing pieces--about her nascent calling as a writer; her sister's suicide and its still unfolding aftermath; the horror unleashed by World War II; the life cycle of the monarch butterfly; and the woods where she seeks asylum--form a moving story, powerfully braiding despair, survival, and hope. What Asylum delivers is a form of hard-won grace and an awareness of the cost of extreme violence, inexplicable loss, and the miraculous cycles of life, in work that carries Bialosky's art to a new level of urgency and achievement.

Yiyun Li, author of six works of fiction and one memoir, brings readers a new novel with Must I Go. Lilia Liska has outlived three husbands, raised five children, and seen the arrival of seventeen grandchildren. Now she has turned her keen attention to the diary of a long-forgotten man named Roland Bouley, with whom she once had a fleeting affair. Increasingly obsessed with Roland's intimate history, Lilia begins to annotate the diary with her own rather different version of events, revealing the surprising, long-held secrets of her past. She returns inexorably to the memory of her daughter Lucy. With great candor and insight, Li navigates the twin poles of grief and resilience, loss and rebirth, that compass a human heart.
