P&P Live!: Jenny Hval — Girls Against God - in conversation with Rebecca Dinerstein Knight and Jeff VanderMeer

Upcoming Event
Tuesday, October 6, 2020 - 4:00pm

This event will be streamed online as part of our P&P Live! Series in partnership with the Royal Norwegian Embassy.

Join Norwegian writer and musician Jenny Hval as she celebrates her new novel, "GIRLS AGAINST GOD" with Rebecca Dinerstein Knight on P&P Live!

Welcome to 1990s Norway. White picket fences run in neat rows and Christian conservatism runs deep. But as the Artist considers her work, things start stirring themselves up. In a corner of Oslo a coven of witches begin cooking up some curses. A time-travelling Edvard Munch arrives in town to join a death metal band, closely pursued by the teenaged subject of his painting Puberty, who has murder on her mind. Meanwhile, out deep in the forest, a group of school girls get very lost and things get very strange. And awful things happen in aspic.

Norwegian writer and musician Jenny Hval has honed an intellectual and uncompromising view of politics and sexuality in her prose as well as in records that include Blood Bitch; Apocalypse, Girl; and Innocence Is Kinky. Her debut novel, Paradise Rot, was published to acclaim in 2018.

Rebecca Dinerstein Knight is the author of novels Hex and The Sunlit Night, and a bilingual English-Norwegian collection of poems, Lofoten. Her screenplay adaptation of The Sunlit Night premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and is now a major motion picture. Knight has reviewed restaurants for The Village Voice and novels for The New York Times Book Review, and her essays have appeared online in The New Yorker, The Paris Review, and The New York Times, among others. A former host of the Lillehammer Literary Festival, she has spent a decade presenting and coordinating English-Norwegian creative projects.

Jeff VanderMeer is the New York Times-bestselling, critically acclaimed author of the Southern Reach trilogy, winner of the Shirley Jackson Award, among others. He has been called “the weird Thoreau” by the New Yorker. The trilogy has been translated into 35 languages and made into a movie by Paramount Pictures. His most recent novels include the YA fantasy misadventure A Peculiar Peril and the surreal experimental novel Dead Astronauts. His eco-thriller Hummingbird Salamander will be released in April of 2021.
