“What you help a child to love can be more important than what you help a child to learn.”
It has been said that a proverb is a short sentence based on a long experience. In African Proverbs for All Ages, anthropologist Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole partners with award-winning author and illustrator Nelda LaTeef to share proverbs drawn from multiple cultures in Africa. These proverbs explore complex notions about relationships, identity, society, and the human condition. Coupled with illustrations, children and adult readers are able to fully engage with the wisdom of the diverse cultures of Africa.
Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole is an anthropologist and educator with master's and doctorate degrees from Northwestern University. Dr. Cole is the only person to have served as president of both Spelman and Bennett Colleges. She was also the director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art from 2009 to 2016.
