“One. Only one. The story starts with one.”

On the way to a community tree planting ceremony, one girl explains the elements of the universe from the faraway stars to the tiny organisms we can only see with a microscope. As the girl and her friends make their trip to do one small thing to help our one special planet, they learn about the Big Bang, Earth’s atmosphere, oceans, trees, and bugs. In Only One, a gorgeously illustrated science picture book about our universe, young readers and listeners are encouraged to protect and preserve the environment.

Deborah Hopkinson is the author of over 50 books, fiction and nonfiction, for young readers, including Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt, A Letter to My Teacher, Sky Boys: How They Built the Empire State Building, and Abe Lincoln Crosses a Creek: A Tall, Thin Tale. She has won many awards for her work including SCBWI Golden Kite Award for Picture Book, the International Reading Award for Young People, and the Green Earth Book Award.

Chuck Groenink is the illustrator of 16 Words by Lisa Rogers, Hanks Big Day by Evan Kuhlman, Honey: The Dog Who Saved Abe Lincoln by Shari Swanson, and William’s Winter Nap by Linda Ashman. His books have received positive reviews in the New York Times and Publisher’s Weekly. Chuck graduated from the ArtEZ Institute of Visual Arts in the Netherlands in 2004.
