ABOUT THE BOOK

The story of Jimi Hendrix’s life unfolds in Song for Jimi: The Story of Guitar Legend Jimi Hendrix. From a difficult childhood where he “lived the blues”, to his stint in the Army, to eventual fame and legendary performances, Jimi’s astonishing, larger-than-life talent explodes on the page through Smith's lyrical verse and Rodriguez’s bright, psychedelic artwork. “Dedicated to all the outcasts, misfits, and unique individuals who, like Jimi, want to wave their freak flag high,” this book will appeal to long-time fans and those encountering him for the first time.

Charles R. Smith Jr. is an award-winning author, photographer, and poet with more than thirty books to his credit. His awards include a Coretta Scott King Award for his photographs accompanying the Langston Hughes poem "My People" and a Coretta Scott King Honor for his biography on Muhammad Ali, 12 Rounds to Glory. He is also the author of Rimshots, Hoop Kings, Hoop Queens, Tall Tales, Short Takes, Diamond Life, and I Am America.

Edel Rodriguez is a Cuban American artist who has exhibited internationally with shows in Los Angeles, Toronto, New York, Dallas, Philadelphia, and Spain. Inspired by personal history, religious rituals, politics, memory, and nostalgia, his bold, figurative works are an examination of identity, cultural displacement, and mortality. Rodriguez's artwork is in the collections of a variety of institutions, including the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.
