P&P Live! Candace Fleming & Elizabeth Spires-Cubs In the Tub: The True Story of the Bronx Zoo's First Woman Zookeeper & Kate's Light: Kate Wlker at Robbins Reef Lighthouse
Helen Martini raised orphaned big cat cubs in her home in the 1940s, which led to her become the first female zookeeper at the Bronx Zoo. In 1890, Kate Walker bravely stepped into her husband’s shoes after he died to became the first woman in charge of an offshore lighthouse in 19th century New York Harbor. Both of these extraordinary women didn’t intentionally strive to be firsts in their fields. Instead, they found jobs that they put their hearts into and nothing was going to deter them from doing what they loved. Join us for a Women’s History Month event with authors Candace Fleming and Elizabeth Spires to learn more about the remarkable lives of Helen and Kate.
