P&P Live! Body Diversity Panel — Every Body Shines: Sixteen Stories About Living Fabulously Fat—with Cassandra Newbould, Alex Gino and Francina Simone - with Sylvie Shaffer

Upcoming Event
Thursday, June 3, 2021 - 7:00pm

Sixteen authors unite their voices in celebration of body positivity. Stories from diverse perspectives in a variety of genres will appeal to a broad range of readers. The defining feature of the short stories are all the strong and vibrant girls, boys, and nonbinary young adults experiencing life in a larger body. In each, fat characters – no longer relegated to the sidelines – take the lead, expressing themselves creatively, falling in love, overcoming fear, and standing up for friends and for themselves. While many stories are joyful, some also explore the challenges of living in a fatphobic world. Readers who are not used to seeing themselves represented in literature will find camaraderie amongst these pages. Join us for a powerful discussion with four of the writer- contributors to this anthology. Sylvie Shaffer will moderate this panel.

Cassandra Newbould is the creator and host of the Fat Like Me podcast and community. Fat Like Me is a show where Cass chats all things fat with authors, entertainers, and activists about life, the arts, and why we desperately need more body diversity in children’s literature today. As a writer of middle grade and young adult fiction, Cassandra creates stories where kids of all sizes can see themselves featured as the main character and not just the funny fat friend.

Alex Gino is the author of middle grade novels Rick, You Don’t Know Everything, Jilly P!, and the Stonewall Award-winning George. They love glitter, ice cream, gardening, awe-ful puns, and stories that reflect the diversity and complexity of being alive.

Francina Simone is a conscious being trying to uplift the world one conversation at a time. She is a storyteller, comic illustrator, and author of The Guardians Trilogy and Smash It. Her books focus on stories about girls throwing caution to the wind to discover exactly who they are and what it means to love.

Renée Watson is a New York Times bestselling author, educator, and community activist. Her young adult novel, Piecing Me Together received a Coretta Scott King Award and Newbery Honor. Her children's picture books and novels for teens have received several awards and international recognition. She has given readings and lectures at many renowned places including the United Nations, the Library of Congress, and the U.S. Embassy in Japan and New Zealand. Her poetry and fiction centers around the experiences of Black girls and women, and explores themes of home, identity, and the intersections of race, class, and gender. Unfortunately, Renée is no longer able to participate.

Sylvie Shaffer is the preK-8 librarian at the Capitol Hill Day School in Washington, DC and is active in several overlapping kidlit-focused communities including ALSC, YALSA, and Capitol Choices. Sylvie served on AJL's 2019 and 2020 Sydney Taylor Book Awards as well as on ALSC's 2018 Geisel Committee.
