Winner of a Writer’s Guild Award in 2016, Kalb is an Emmy-nominated writer for Jimmy Kimmel Live and a regular contributor to The New Yorker’s “Daily Shouts.” The voice in her unique memoir, though, was scripted by her formidable and endearing grandmother, Bobby, Kalb’s advisor, confidante, and best friend. Bobby died in 2017 at age 89, but she lives on via the voicemails Kalb saved and replays here, messages full of career tips, make-up advice, and vivid accounts of her own and the family’s history, from Kalb’s great-grandmother’s escape from the pogroms in 1880s Belarus and her arrival in Brooklyn to Bobby’s marriage to a businessman, her children’s experience of the American dream, and Kalb’s own rise as a professional comedy writer.
