Politics and Prose is delighted to partner with the DC Public Library and the DC Public Library Foundation for an inspirational panel on the "Craft of Bookmaking" for teens.

This event features Levine Querido authors, editors, and designers from two featured books: A is for Bee: An Alphabet Book in Translation, a picture book; and, Freedom! The Story of the Black Panther Party, YA narrative nonfiction. The focus of the panel is on bookmaking — writing, design, and editing — and will be moderated by DC Public Library teen staff members.

The first 50 young people to register for the event and select the "Free Event Admission + Free Book" option at registration will receive complimentary copies of each of the two books for their home library (one sign-up per family, please). Recipients of the complimentary copy will pick their books up in the Alma Thomas Teen Space at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, 901 G St. NW, Washington, DC, beginning Wednesday, July 27. Please note that complimentary book copies must be picked up by Saturday, August 6. These books are generously donated by the District of Columbia Public Library Foundation.

This program is presented in conjunction with D.C. Public Library’s Know Your Power contest, sponsored by Pepco. Teens are invited to submit an original work of writing, photography, illustration, or music that expresses their feelings on a social issue that matters to them. More information can be found at https://www.dclibrary.org/knowyourpower.

About the books and participants:

A is for Bee: An Alphabet Book in Translation is a different kind of ABC book. Each letter is hidden somewhere on its illustrated page, with words in several languages, adding an A-to-Z seek-and-find element for the reader.

Author/illustrator of A is for Bee: An Alphabet Book in Translation, Ellen Heck has received degrees from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Brown University. She works as a printmaker in North Carolina and is represented by galleries in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Ellen’s editor, Arthur Levine, founded Levine Querido in 2019, after a 23-year tenure as the President and Publisher of Arthur A. Levine Books, an imprint of Scholastic. In addition to overseeing Levine Querido, Arthur edits between eight and ten books annually.

Freedom! The Story of the Black Panther Party is a meticulously researched yet accessible history of the Black Panther Party, allowing young readers a glimpse of the many facets of the revolutionary movement’s impact on history. Paired with historical photos, the story dives deeper into the party members, their supporters and allies, and the government programs set in place to damage the organization.

Jetta Grace Martin, the debut author of Freedom! The Story of the Black Panther Party, is from the San Francisco Bay Area. She earned her A.B. in Social Studies and African American Studies from Harvard University. Jetta is also a dancer, performer and choreographer.

Nick Thomas is Executive Editor at Levine Querido and editor of Freedom! The Story of the Black Panther Party. Previously, he was Senior Editor at Arthur A. Levine Books, where he started as an Editorial Assistant. He edits middle grade and young adult books.

Jon Key, is an artist, designer, and writer originally from Seale, Alabama and the designer of Freedom! The Story of the Black Panther Party. He is a Co-Founder and Design Director at Codify Art, a multidisciplinary collective dedicated to creating, producing, supporting, and showcasing work by artists of color, particularly women, queer, and trans artists of color.

Levine Querido was founded in 2019 with the guiding principle to bring a diverse selection of "The Best of the World's Literature for Young People" to American readers through the search for diverse, powerful, unique voices and visions from the multitude of cultures closer to home.
