Politics and Prose is delighted to partner with DC Public Library, the DC Public Library Foundation, and Pepco for an inspirational program for teens with teen artist Tyler Gordon who will discuss his debut book We Can: Portraits of Power and his art process.

Tyler Gordon skyrocketed to fame when he painted a portrait of Kamala Harris and landed a Time cover of LeBron James. His debut picture book We Can: Portraits of Power features his graphic paintings of the American heroes who’ve inspired him —musicians, artists, writers, civil rights leaders, sports legends, change-makers, record-setters, and more—paired with short profiles of each. Born with deafness, battling bullies, and a stutter, Gordon embraced art as a way to communicate his big thoughts and feelings with the world. Just like the icons featured in his book, Gordon is an inspiration for all ages.

Tyler Gordon is a fourteen-year-old painter whose work has been featured in Time Magazine, Essence, Good Morning America, and ABC News. In 2020, he was awarded the Global Child Prodigy Award. He currently lives in San Jose, California with his family.

This event will be broadcast live from the Martin Luther King Memorial Library in the auditorium as part of DCPL's Reopening Day open house. Audience members present during the live broadcast will receive a free copy of We Can: Portraits of Power. These books are generously donated by the District of Columbia Public Library Foundation.

If you're unable to attend in person, you can register to join us virtually. There is no cost for virtual registration and there is an opportunity to purchase the book at check out. Signed bookplates available with purchase, while supplies last.

This program is presented in conjunction with D.C. Public Library’s Know Your Power contest, sponsored by Pepco. Teens were invited to submit an original work of writing, photography, illustration, or music that expresses their feelings on a social issue that matters to them. The Know Your Power contest winners will be announced directly following the event.
