P&P Live! and DC Public Library Present G. Neri and Jesse Joshua Watson-Concrete Cowboy

Upcoming Event
Tuesday, June 29, 2021 - 4:00pm

Politcs and Prose is delighted to partner with DC Public Library, the DC Public Library Foundation and Pepco for an inspirational program for teens with author G. Neri and illustrator Jesse Joshua Watson in conjunction with their book Concrete Cowboy, now a major motion picture available on Netflix.

Please see details below to receive a free copy of Concrete Cowboy, while supplies last, sponsored by the DC Public Library Foundation.

In Concrete Cowboy, a 12-year-old Black boy named Coltrane is caught defacing property in his hometown of Detroit and is sent to live with his father in Philadelphia. Coltrane – or “Cole” as he is called by friends – was never close with his father. When he arrives, he is surprised to find that his father is a member of the urban cowboy community. In a tradition believed to date back to the late 19th century, the urban cowboys maintain stables and ride their horses through the streets of North Philly. The stables become a safe haven for Cole. His experience with the horses and the multi-generational cowboy community teaches him important lessons of respect and responsibility. Neri’s book turns the literary trope of the cowboy on its head and introduces new readers to a culture that is not well known.

G. Neri is known for his work in young adult fiction. He has written books in free verse and novelistic prose, as well as graphic novels. Neri has received awards from the American Library Association, the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the International Reading Association. He is the Coretta Scott King honor-winning author of Yummy: The Last Days of a Southside Shorty and the recipient of the Lee Bennett Hopkins Promising Poet Award for his free-verse novella, Chess Rumble.

Jesse Joshua Watson is the illustrator of Concrete Cowboy. He has also illustrated Soccer Fence, the bestselling Hank Zipper series, I and I – Bob Marley, Chess Rumble, These Things I Wish and the Ziggy and the Black Dinosaurs series. In addition to writing and illustrating books and teaching art to kids, Jesse plays soccer religiously. He lives in Port Townsend, Washington, with his wife and their sons.

The first 100 young people to join the event and select the "Free Event Admission + Free Book" option at registration will receive a complimentary copy of Concrete Cowboy for their home library (one book per family please). Recipients of the complimentary copy will pick their books up at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, 901 G St. NW, Washington, DC, beginning June 28. These books are generously donated by the District of Columbia Public Library Foundation.

This program is presented in conjunction with D.C. Public Library’s Know Your Power contest, sponsored by Pepco. Teens are invited to submit an original work of writing, photography, illustration, or music that expresses their feelings on a social issue that matters to them.
