When a local chapter of the Nazi party exacerbates racial tensions in Andrew Young’s hometown of New Orleans in the 1930s, he doesn’t understand what is happening. To help his son understand, his father introduces young Andrew to newsreels of track star Jesse Owens racing toward Olympic gold, showing the world that the best way to promote equality is to focus on the finish line. This led to a deeper understanding and a sense of pride allowing Andrew to work, play and try harder to counter racist beliefs.

Andrew Young was a close friend and advisor of Martin Luther King, Jr., and later became the first African American congressperson to represent the deep South since Reconstruction. He promoted human rights around the world as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations and continues to build global equality through the Andrew J. Young Foundation.

Paula Young Shelton is an early childhood educator with nearly thirty years of experience teaching young children. She is the author of the acclaimed children's book Child of the Civil Rights Movement, a Bank Street College of Education Best Children’s Book of the Year.
