P&P Live! : Alex Halberstadt - Young Heroes of the Soviet Union: A Memoir and a Reckoning, in conversation with Ivan Sigal

Upcoming Event
Friday, March 20, 2020 - 7:00pm

This event will be streamed online as part of our P&P Live! Series.

Author of the award-winning Lonely Avenue, Halberstadt in his new book writes at the nexus of history and family memoir, charting journeys through six countries—and as many time periods—in search of answers to questions about personal and national trauma. In a series of haunting and illuminating narratives, Halberstadt recounts traveling to Ukraine and meeting his paternal grandfather, the last of Stalin’s surviving bodyguards; uncovering the anti-Semitism and Holocaust atrocities that shaped his mother’s life in Lithuania; piecing together his parents’ precarious existence in Cold War Moscow; and tracing his own story from the Soviet Union to Queens, where he struggled with questions of identity,  rootlessness, and the haunting legacy of his family’s displacements.
