A gripping story unfolds in two timelines in the latest novel from a bestselling author. On September 11, 2001, nine-year-old Brandon goes to work with his dad at the World Trade Center in New York City. When two planes hit the towers, they must try to escape a fiery nightmare as terror and confusion whirl around them. In present-day Afghanistan, eleven-year-old Reshmina dreams of a peaceful world she’s never known. When she ends up harboring a wounded young American soldier, she and her family are put in mortal danger. But Reshmina also learns something surprising about the roots of this endless war. With his trademark skill, Alan Gratz delivers an action-packed and insightful story of two kids whose lives connect in unexpected ways, and reminds us how the past and present are always more linked than we think.

Alan Gratz is the New York Times bestselling author of seventeen novels for young readers, including Refugee, Allies, Grenade, Prisoner B-3087, Projekt 1065, and Ban This Book. He has been a Writer in Residence at Tokyo’s American School in Japan, the James Thurber House in Columbus, Ohio, and the Jakarta Intercultural School in Indonesia. A native of Knoxville, Tennessee he lives in Asheville, North Carolina with his wife and daughter.
