P&P Live!: Alain Mabanckou — The Death of Comrade President - in conversation with Dominic Thomas

Upcoming Event
Saturday, October 24, 2020 - 5:00pm

This event will be streamed online as part of our P&P Live! Series.

Join award winning novelist Alain Mabanckou as he discusses his new book, "THE DEATH OF COMRADE PRESIDENT" with Dominic Thomas on P&P Live!

Mabanckou's riotous new novel, The Death of Comrade President, returns to the 1970s milieu of his awarding-winning novel Black Moses, telling the story of Michel, a daydreamer whose life is completely overthrown when, in March 1977, just before the arrival of the rainy season, Congo's Comrade President Marien Ngouabi is brutally murdered. Thanks to his mother's kinship with the president, not even naive Michel can remain untouched. And if he is to protect his family, Michel must learn to lie.

Alain Mabanckou was born in Congo in 1966. An award-winning novelist, poet, and essayist, Mabanckou currently lives in Los Angeles, where he teaches literature at UCLA. He is the author of African Psycho, Broken Glass, Black Bazaar, and Tomorrow I’ll Be Twenty, as well as The Lights of Pointe-Noire, Black Moses, and The Death of Comrade President (The New Press). In 2015, Mabanckou was a finalist for the Man Booker International Prize.

Dominic Thomas is Chair of the Department of European Languages and Transcultural Studies at UCLA. He is the author of Black France and edits the Global African Voices series at Indiana University Press.

Instead of a set ticket price, we have provided a couple different ways for you to attend this event. If you'd like to purchase a copy of the book, you will not be charged an extra fee for a ticket, and we can either ship your copy, or you can retrieve it at one of our stores.

Additionally, you can contribute what you can to support Politics and Prose Bookstore and our virtual event series. A suggested contribution of $5, $10, whatever you can afford, will go a long way to keep our programming—and our bookstore—afloat as we are forced to adapt to new ways of business.

We know that everyone has been affected in these trying times, and we will continue to make our programming as accessible as possible. If you are unable to support us with a purchase, you can register for the event for free. We thank you for support, now and always.
