Petina Gappah - Out of Darkness, Shining Light — at Politics and Prose at The Wharf

Upcoming Event
Tuesday, September 17, 2019 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

In her powerful new novel, Gappah, the award-winning Zimbabwean author of two short-story collections and The Book of Memory, develops a historical footnote into a sweeping view of nineteenth- century Africa. Set in 1873, the book starts with the death of Dr. David Livingstone, the Scottish missionary and explorer who hoped to find the source of the Nile and to end the East Africa-Arab slave trade. As a loyal retinue carries Livingstone’s body 1,500 miles across Africa so it can be shipped back to England, Livingstone’s cook, Halima, and his former slave, Jacob, recount stories of the Doctor and of their experiences of colonialism. With support from Young African Professionals.
