Peter Shinkle - Ike's Mystery Man: The Secret Lives of Robert Cutler — in conversation with Michael Isikoff

Upcoming Event
Sunday, January 20, 2019 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Robert "Bobby" Cutler (1895-1974) earned a law degree at Harvard and served two stints as Eisenhower’s National Security Advisor. While historians have recognized his contributions to the country’s Cold War policy, until now, none have assessed his work in light of his private life. A closeted gay man, Cutler worked with several other gay men in Washington at a time when Executive Order 10450 banned gay people from government employment and made them subject to relentless persecution. Shinkle, a longtime investigative reporter and Cutler’s great-nephew, draws on his subject’s six-volume diary as well as on thousands of personal letters, interviews, and other documents for a vivid picture of the nation during the 1950s Lavender Scare and a belated tribute to the work of men forced to lie in order to serve their country. Shinkle will be in conversation with Michael Isikoff, chief investigative correspondent at Yahoo! News.
