After Ok Lee’s father unexpectedly dies, his mom is forced to take every job she can get just to make ends meet. Seeing her struggle financially, Ok becomes determined to step up and help out. He decides to enter his school’s talent show and try to win the $100 cash prize. The only problem is, Ok can’t sing or dance! So, while he’s figuring out what his talent could be, he also starts working on his next money-making effort: a hair-braiding business. But his classmates, friends and foes, complicate his new get-rich-quick scheme. To make matters even worse, his mom starts seeing the apparently untrustworthy Deacon Koh from their Korean Church, which Ok cannot condone. Ok needs to think of a way to address the problems he sees—without anyone else’s help—and fast. This quirky book is chock-full of tough truths and undeniable heart. Ages 10 to 13.
