Nicole Dennis-Benn - Patsy — with YAP DC at Politics and Prose at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Saturday, June 8, 2019 - 6:00pm to 7:00pm

Dennis-Benn, born and raised in Jamaica, made a stunning literary debut with her Lambda Award-winning Here Comes the Sun, a powerful and moving portrait of two sisters struggling to fulfill their dreams amid the harsh realities of Montego Bay. In her eagerly awaited second novel, Dennis-Benn follows the eponymous Patsy from Jamaica to Brooklyn, where she reunites with the woman she loves. But rather than a romantic idyll, Patsy’s new life as an undocumented immigrant is a constant battle for survival. Meanwhile, the daughter she left behind faces her own questions about sexuality, love, and the price of independence. Alternating these two compelling stories, Dennis-Benn explores questions of race, class, and colorism through the lens of the queer female immigrant experience. This event is hosted in partnership with Young African Professionals DC.
