Nicholas Lemann - Transaction Man: The Rise of the Deal and the Decline of the American Dream — at Politics and Prose at The Wharf

In a series of vivid profiles, Lemann, a New Yorker staff writer and the author of books including The Big Test and The Promised Land, traces today’s socio-political divisiveness and glaring income inequality to three pivotal figures. He starts with Adolf Berle, FDR’s chief economic theorist, who advocated a society anchored by corporations able to offer stable employment and generous pensions. That vision was tweaked in the 1970s when, led by Harvard Business School’s Michael Jensen, shareholders demanded that their interests come first. Finally, Silicon Valley entrepreneurs like LinkedIn cofounder Reid Hoffman have pushed to let “networks” solve our problems. Showing how this arc has played out, Lemann tracks the rise and fall of Lehman Brothers and a family-run Chicago car dealership.
