Nancy Naomi Carlson - An Infusion of Violets & Jason Gray - Radiation King

Upcoming Event
Sunday, June 9, 2019 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

An award-winning translator and poet, Carlson has rendered English editions of books by a wide range of Francophone poets, including René Char, Martinique’s Suzanne Dracius, and Dijbouti’s Abdourahman Waberi—one of which, The Nomads, My Brothers, Go Out to Drink from the Big Dipper, was a finalist for the 2016 Best Translated Book Award. She has won two chapbook awards for her own poetry, and her first full-length collection, Kings Highway, was a co-winner for the Washington Writers’ Publishing House competition. Writing with her signature musical and sensuous language, in her new book of poems Carlson introduces characters including Monet, Rachmaninoff, and her own ex-husbands, displaying a technical virtuosity with both traditional forms and free-verse poems.

Gray, author of two poetry chapbooks, won the 2008 Hollis Summers Prize for his first full-length collection, Photographing Eden, which was praised for the poet’s “quiet but profound” attention to detail in both nature and art. In his second book Gray tunes his lyric intensity to the past and future of the atomic world, exploring a history of fallout shelters and radioactive cure-alls as well as envisioning both the possible utopia of limitless energy and the catastrophe of nuclear annihilation. As he looks from microscopic hydrogen atoms to the cosmic Eagle Nebula, Gray implicitly questions where humanity falls on this scale.
