Monica Hesse - American Fire: Love, Arson, and Life in a Vanishing Land — in conversation with Dan Zak

Upcoming Event
Thursday, July 13, 2017 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Hesse, author of the Holocaust novel Girl in the Blue Coat, is a feature writer for The Washington Post and she spent two years investigating a rash of fires in Virginia’s rural Accomack County. While the acts were clearly arson and their perpetrator admitted guilt to 67 counts, Hesse was drawn to the deeper questions the case raised. What provokes someone to turn to arson? And what is the role of arson in American socio-cultural history? Hesse tells a mesmerizing story of a couple, a passionate relationship that spun out of control, and the economic pressures that can drive people to desperate measures.

Hesse will be in conversation with Dan Zak, fellow reporter for The Washington Post and author of the book Almighty: Courage, Resistance, and Existential Peril in the Nuclear Age.
