Michele Gelfand - Rule Makers, Rule Breakers: How Tight and Loose Cultures Wire Our World — in conversation with Todd Kliman

Upcoming Event
Saturday, September 15, 2018 - 6:00pm to 7:00pm

Gelfand’s pioneering research on cultural norms and how they affect both group and individual behavior took her to some fifty countries. In each place she consulted with political scientists, anthropologists, neuroscientists, and other experts to ask one key question: was there pressure to conform to certain rules, or were people left to decide for themselves how to act? Gelfand, professor of psychology at the University of Maryland, College Park, found pluses and minuses in both types of culture, but her point isn’t to advocate one over the other. Rather, she uses the differences between “tight” and “loose” societies as a template to predict how people will respond to given situations, including how creative they will be, how innovative, how happy, and, most importantly, how they will react to perceived threats.

Gelfand will be in conversation with Todd Kliman, two-time James Beard Award Winning food writer.
