Michael A. Nutter - Mayor: The Best Job in Politics — at Politics and Prose at The Wharf

Upcoming Event
Thursday, January 25, 2018 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

While Nutter tells vivid and illustrative stories from his tenure as a two-term mayor of Philadelphia, his book is less a memoir than a loving job description. The important work of governing a city starts with coalition building before the mayor-elect takes office. While this marshaling of interests can set the stage for a successful term, the mayor must also have the skills required to make the transition from campaigning to governing. Then, once in office, a mayor needs to be a pragmatic problem-solver and have a grasp of the entire urban infrastructure. Nutter, one of Esquire magazine’s Americans of the Year and Governing Magazine’s Public Official of the Year, had these skills and more. He is currently serving on the Homeland Security Advisory Council, teaching at Columbia University SIPA, and providing political commentary for CNN.
