Michael Mandelbaum - The Rise and Fall of Peace on Earth

Upcoming Event
Sunday, March 3, 2019 - 3:00pm to 4:00pm

In his new book, Mandelbaum, professor emeritus of American foreign policy at SAIS and the author of books including Mission Failure and The Ideas That Conquered the World, examines in detail the twenty-five years of extraordinary peacefulness that followed the end of the Cold War. While wars did break out during that time, they were relatively small-scale and infrequent, until three nations, threatened by uncertain economic growth, pursued aggressive nationalist policies. Showing how and why Putin’s Russia, Xi Jinping’s China, and the Shia clerics’ Iran ended this halcyon era, Mandelbaum argues that the return of true peace depends on free elections and religious, economic, and political liberty throughout the world—though no nation can impose genuine democracy on another.
