Michael Cottman - Shackles from the Deep: Tracing the Path of a Sunken Slave Ship, a Bitter Past, and a Rich Legacy

Upcoming Event
Friday, February 3, 2017 - 10:30am to 11:30am

When a scuba diving treasure hunter finds a pair of shackles on the ocean floor, they lead him to an undiscovered slave ship called the Henrietta Marie. Upon learning of the discovered shackles, prize-winning journalist Michael Cottman goes on a journey of investigation through the uncharted waters of the transatlantic slave trade. When Cottman asks the right questions, he unearths details of this long-lost piece of history, while also making a personal inquiry into his own heritage. Shackles from the Deep introduces young readers to solving mysteries through research, as well as the past and present systemic barriers minorities have crossed to break into major academic fields. Ages 10 and up.
