Michael Benanav - Himalaya Bound: One Family's Quest to Save Their Animals--and an Ancient Way of Life

Upcoming Event
Saturday, February 3, 2018 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Benanav’s first book, Men of Salt, chronicled the arduous life of the people who hack rock salt from the Sahara. In his new book he tracks the similarly ancient practices of a nomadic tribe of water buffalo herders in northern India. Living and walking with the group for forty-four days, Benanav, a writer and photographer for publications including The New York Times Travel section, got a rare glimpse of the isolated Van Gujjars, a pastoral ethnic group spread across India, Pakistan, and northeastern Afghanistan. He also saw that that this way of life, intimately tied to nature, is as endangered as the forests, fields, and animals it depends on. Refused access to their ancestral summer pastures, the tribe was forced to find an alternative, but was left wondering if they still have a place in the modern world.
