Michael Ames - American Cipher: Bowe Bergdahl and the U.S. Tragedy in Afghanistan

Upcoming Event
Saturday, March 23, 2019 - 6:00pm to 7:00pm

Private First Class Bowe Bergdahl left his post in eastern Afghanistan on June 30, 2009, and was held by the Taliban until May 31, 2014. He later pleaded guilty to desertion and was dishonorably discharged, but the case has been surrounded by questions and controversy ever since. In this comprehensive report of both the government’s clumsy handling of the incident—which reflects the larger problems of the conflict in general—and Bergdahl’s actions, motives, and background, Ames, a military reporter who lived in Bergdahl’s hometown for nine years, sets the record straight. Co-authored with Afghanistan War vet Matt Farwell and drawing on more than one hundred interviews with sources including cabinet-level officials, diplomats, intelligence officers, and Bergdahl’s friends, he proves that Bergdahl deliberately abandoned his post to protest the way the U.S. was conducting the war.
